1. What is the cost of using a CGDI gazetteer service?

There is no charge for using any of the CGDI gazetteer services. The technology is freely available on the Web. The federal government funded the development of this technology through the GeoConnections initiative, as part of its commitment to making Canadian geospatial information accessible to all Canadians.

2. Where does the data for CGDI gazetteers come from?

Providing geographical names is responsibility shared by the provincial, territorial and federal members of the Geographical Names Board of Canada (GNBC). For more than 100 years, the GNBC and its Secretariat have coordinated this work, setting national standards and brokering agreements to make these names available as a comprehensive national view of Canada’s official geographical names.
