How do I use a WMS?

To publish your geospatial data using a web map server, follow these 4 steps:

  1. Analyze the data you are planning to make available: this is crucial preparation for the next step.

  2. Choose and acquire OGC-compliant software to implement the specification. For a current list of OGC-compliant software applications, see:
    http://www.opengis.org/resources/?page=products.

  3. Configure your software to deploy the web map service; this includes configuring the data and metadata you have decided to publish.

  4. To promote your web map service to Internet users, register it with the discovery mechanism(s) of your choice. Discovery mechanisms continue to join the CGDI on a regular basis. You can find a current list of discovery mechanisms to choose at:

Did you know?

Billions of dollars worth of digital maps and earth images which could not previously be accessed and used without special skills and software, have become an integral part of the information infrastructure, thanks to the OpenGIS® Web Map Server Interface Implementation Specification.

Using ordinary web browsers, software conforming to this specification can automatically overlay map images obtained from multiple map servers, regardless of map scale, projection, coordinate system or format. Maps and images such as transportation routes, land use and ownership, zoning, watersheds, elevation, population density, average income, aerial photos, cell phone coverages, and pipelines can now be viewed and integrated online by users around the world.
