Metadata for Geodata

Before you create metadata for the geospatial data you intend to publish within the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure, you should familiarize yourself with the CGDI’s Metadata for Geodata content standard.

“Metadata for Geodata” defines the content standard for registries of geospatial metadata. Currently, the CGDI has adopted the US Federal Geographic Data Committee’s Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (FGDC CSDGM). It is also anticipated that the CGDI will also adopt ISO 19115 as a format for its “Metadata for Geodata” standard.

Geodata includes all types of geographic (or geospatial) data entities. Examples of geodata are:

  1. A collection of related geographic features. Click on the National Scale Frameworks Road Network, Canada for an example.
  2. A satellite image. Click on SPOT High Resolution Visible Imagery over Canada for an example.
  3. A collection of geodata products. Click on Global Landsat 5 TM Mosaic Tiles for an example.

Click on Metadata for Geodata for more information about this content standard from the CGDI.
