Steps

How do I create metadata?

There are six steps to creating quality metadata.

  1. Set aside time to organize your information; it will save you time and money in the long run.

  2. Familiarize yourself with the FGDC and ISO 19115 content standards.

  3. Find examples of similar metadata by searching the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure. It’s always easier to start something new when you see how others have done it before you.

  4. Select a toolkit designed for the type of data you are documenting.

  5. Write and format your metadata using the toolkit, following the standards.

  6. Review the content of your metadata, to ensure that the information describes your data sets completely and accurately.
