Toolkits

There are several geospatial metadata “toolkits” available to help you create your metadata. They can be stand-alone, Internet applications, or integrated into geospatial applications. Most toolkits create fully FGDC-compliant metadata, and some can extend the FGDC standard with FGDC profiles or extensions.

You can also use metadata toolkits to register your data sets with a geospatial discovery mechanism of your choice. Click to view a list of metadata toolkit vendors.

Before you start

When creating metadata, you must first understand two things:

  1. The data you are about to describe; and
  2. The content standard that applies to your data.
