Welcome to Module 3, Standards-based Web Development.

Standardization is the process of getting people to agree on acceptable technical solutions to common problems. Standards not only guide and prescribe new technology, but also support existing systems and data.

Geospatial standards are becoming increasingly important for the harmonization of digital geographic information, and indeed to the broader geomatics industry, which continues to expand through the application and manipulation of geospatial data and services.

In this module, you will learn about:

  • Geospatial standards and specifications;
  • The importance of compliance in web development;
  • The roles of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) and Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) in developing and endorsing standards;
  • Examples of CGDI-endorsed standards and specifications.

This module comprises 11 pages, and should take you about 15 minutes to complete.
