Using GeoConference in Emergency Management
For Additional Information or a Live Demonstration of GeoConference
We present here two cases using GeoConference in emergency management. These are incident simulations, but they are based on real events. In each case, the scenario of use was originally developed by one of the collaborating organizations in the project. Each contains a number of screen captures illustrating the activity of the users. Note that the screens are captured from a real geoconferencing session.
The Search and Rescue Simulation (Scenario 1) was developed by personnel in the Natural Hazards Information System project (Natural Hazards and Emergency Response Program, Natural Resources Canada). NHIS provided a variety of geodata to support the simulation. The simulation also depends heavily on the Centre for Topographic Information (CTI; Natural Resources Canada) WMS, which provides visualization of the entire at 1:50,000- and 1:250,000-scale NTDB, as well as a variety of other geoinformation.
The River Ice and Flood Monitoring Simulation (Scenario 2) was developed by Sécurité civile du Québec (SCQ; Direction des opérations territoriales de la sécurité civle, Sécurité publique Québec). Geoinformation used in the simulation has been provided by SCQ, CTI (NTDB), and the Direction générale de l’information géographique (Ressources naturelles, Faune et Parcs Québec). The Institut national de recherché scientifique – Eau, terre, environnement provided a set of Radar earth observation image products (© Canadian Space Agency, © INRS-ETE).
We do not provide client software for download from this site -- it would not be useful without a user name and password on a server. However, we will be happy to arrange a live Internet demonstration of the product for one or more persons.
When you contact us for a demonstration, we will make arrangements to send you a demonstration GeoConference client (approx.200KB) and we will set up a username and password for a limited period on one of our demonstration servers.
To arrange a demonstration, contact Charles Siegel at Consultants TGIS (charles.siegel@tgis.ca).
Note that to use the client software, you will need a computer with the following installed:
· Microsoft Windows™ 98 or later (Windows 2000™ or Windows XP™ recommended);
· The Microsoft .NET Framework™, version 1.1+. Note that many recent installations of Windows XP (from summer 2003 onward) have the .NET Framework installed.
The computer must have an Internet connection, and must be able to contact Web sites as a client (directly or through a gateway, router, proxy server, etc.). A broadband connection is recommended but not essential.
We can furnish a variety of information about our GeoConference product. Contact Charles Siegel at Consultants TGIS (charles.siegel@tgis.ca)
