Ontology Service

Under investigation
Description

An Ontology Service does two things:

  1. It provides a mechanism to maintain a thesaurus of terms that indicates equivalent terms in different languages, disciplines, and data suppliers, particularly those terms that are geospatial in context.
  2. It facilitates manual or automated translation of metadata, text, or feature type selections.

Other Info

An ontology service is seen as a low priority. It is unlikely that it will be specified before 2005. There are no special geospatial requirements for the specification of this service, so CGDI may be able to adopt specifications for this service from another IT community.

Functions to maintain the semantic relations within and between different thesauri could be included.
