Overview

Over the years, GeoConnections has established strong and mutually beneficial relationships with those who develop applications for and using the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI). GeoConnections intends to maintain and expand those relationships as demand grows for tools and solutions that capitalize on the CGDI’s power as a decision-making resource.

Current technologies are vital to the CGDI

To offer end-users as much value as possible, the CGDI and its technology must remain up to date. And that’s no easy task. Advances in computers, software, and web services technology continually redefine “leading edge” in the geomatics industry. Systems and applications deemed advanced today can quickly become outmoded as the latest innovations reach the market and raise the bar.

GeoConnections is relying on your services and skills as an applications developer to keep CGDI technology current. Consequently, we’re now working closely with applications developers, just as we did when building the CGDI in the first place. In fact, we credit Canada ’s development community with creating the applications that generate the CGDI’s most potent value—the ability to integrate location-based data from diverse sources and thereby give decision-makers real insights into Canada ’s most pressing issues.

Standards broaden market opportunities for applications developers

The broader one’s potential market, the greater one’s potential revenues. You stand to gain from this fact. That’s because if you develop applications that conform to CGDI standards—as advocated and endorsed by GeoConnections—there is the potential to reuse services and offerings. And you can build your solutions not only for markets in Canada but also for users and operators of other spatial data infrastructures around the globe. Bigger markets. Bigger impacts and bigger potential for revenues.

Data sharing expands the CGDI’s utility

Data standards in themselves are insufficient to capture the whole value of the CGDI. Organizations that own and provide data must be persuaded to share their information with others. In fact, the success of the CGDI hinges upon providing access to and enabling the integration of a variety of data sets—e.g., road networks, wildlife habitats, watersheds, and municipal boundaries—to generate unique views of the world.

GeoConnections therefore works to encourage data owners and providers to make their data readily accessible to others. These efforts not only enhance the value and accessibility of existing geomatics data and services, they also expand your opportunity to create new applications, products, and services.

Funding opportunities are tailored to obtain desired results

GeoConnections contributes funding toward projects that meet specific needs for CGDI applications. Those needs are specified in the program's announcements of opportunity and requests for proposals.

To be eligible for funding, proposed projects must meet at least one of two essential high-level criteria: one, that they evolve the CGDI to better meet the needs of decision-makers in four priority areas (public health, public safety and security, Aboriginal communities, or the environment and sustainable development), or two, that they keep CGDI technology at the leading edge. Projects must also address a number of other specific criteria that are outlined in each announcement of opportunity.

CGDI Development Network offers forum for discussion and learning

The CGDI Development Network offers an online forum in which to share ideas, ask questions, find answers, contribute knowledge, and explore solutions—all related to the technical components of the CGDI. Comprising more than 200 members from the geomatics industry, all levels of government, academia, and not-for-profit associations, the CGDI Development Network offers dialogue between experts, best practices, presentations, online training, and other resources to help you create applications for the CGDI. All developers are invited and encouraged to join, so register today.
